Attracting Black Soldier Flies and Breeding them

by admin on August 13, 2010

If you want to attract and breed Black Soldier Flies for the larvae they produce you will need a couple of things. I large pan, pot or bucket.  Some chicken food or vegetable food scraps and some rotten organic matter.  Freshly eaten corn cobs, rotten potatoes or compost that has started to go putrescent is perfect.

Black Soldier Flies are natural to nearly every state during the summer.  Just set out the pan and wait.  Keep the mixture moist and keep watch.  You will attract flies and they will breed in your mixture but once you get Black Soldier Fly Larvae growing they will push out the flies.

Once you have a few larvae growing it will attract more Black Solider Flies and you will be off to a great start.

In warm weather you can maintain a herd of flies by building a screen house to keep the flies from migrating.  Make sure the tent or screen house is no smaller than 3 feet wide by 9 feet tall. Black Soldier Flies need room to fly and breed. Place plants in the tent and mist daily.  You will have happy flies that will breed and grow in numbers so that you have a renewable source of Soldier Grubs.
